A Fine Balance

-- It looks like Lieberman got off easier than B. Clinton will. He may have to give up his subcmte gavel, but the ex-POTUS may be forced to forfeit some of his lucrative speaking gigs before his wife can move over to Foggy Bottom.

-- No one, including the Clintons, are surprised at the scrutiny focused on B. Clinton. Still, will it be seen as another reminder of the cracks that HRC hasn't yet made in the glass ceiling? In '93, we were introduced to "Nanny-gate" and the public acknowledgment that working women were defined not simply by their success at work, but at how well they could balance work and family.

-- For the post-Baby Boom generation, the idea that both spouses have powerful jobs isn't revolutionary. But for now, it's women who are still more likely to answer for their husband's dealings. Not the other way around.

-- Meanwhile, if the Obamas, the most high profile post-Boom couple, have work-family angst, they aren't sharing it with the world. Is this simply a reflection of their relationship, or a sign that this generation has already moved beyond the old terms of the debate?

Quote of the Day

"The question is, do I trust Senator Lieberman? The answer is yes. I trust Senator Lieberman."

— Senate Maj. Leader Harry Reid, on the Dem caucus vote, mult., 11/18.

Could We Interest You In A Threesome?

With all this talk about big candidate fields in potential SEN specials in TX, MA, NY, etc, we're wondering: When was the last time more than two sitting House members ever squared off on a single ballot? We think it may be the '87 LA GOV primary featuring then-Dem Reps. Buddy Roemer and Billy Tauzin and then-Rep. Bob Livingston (R), but let us know if we're wrong. (Note: Three members simply running for the same seat, e.g. NM SEN '08, wouldn't count, unless it was an open primary.)
