As the newspaper and broadcast industries shrink, philanthropic ventures seek to rejuvenate news reporting.

As newspaper owners and broadcasters cut back or abandon coverage in the face of competition from the Internet and a dismal economy, a new model of news gathering is emerging: nonprofit ventures that operate with some degree of philanthropic support.
