The campaign against fat has failed, even backfired. Maybe it's time to emphasize fitness instead of weight.
Four decades of anti-obesity efforts have failed to reduce Americans' girth. And although more and more data indicate that extreme obesity is life threatening, people who are a tad overweight apparently are at less risk of dying prematurely than those at an "ideal" weight.
